St Mary's-Greyfriars'

Daily Bible verse

1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:1-5 (NIV)

The minister

Jamie MillikenRead Jamie's letters here.

Jamie Milliken has been the minister of St. Mary's-Greyfriars' linked with Caerlaverock since October 2005. Prior to his ordination and induction he was probationary minister in St Kentigern's Parish Church, New Farm Loch, Kilmarnock.

He became a Christian in 1993 in the Church of the Nazarene, a Wesleyian Holiness Church. After training with the Scottish Churches Open College he joined the Church of Scotland and was given encouragement for fulltime ministry by the congregation and minister of Fullarton Parish in Irvine. His formal training took place in Bourtreehill (Relief) Parish Church, Gairbraid and Maryhill Parish Churches, Mansfield Trinity Kilwinning (New Charge Development), Symington linked with Craigie Parish Churches and HMP Bowhouse, Kilmarnock.

He studied an Honours degree in Divinity at the University of Glasgow and also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Studies from the University of Paisley.

Before training for ministry Jamie was a police officer for eight years, serving in North Ayrshire, where he worked on beat duties, administration and community safety. Jamie became a Christian whilst in the police. He says: "I found that in policing you can experience some of the worst of life and human nature. At the same time I started going to church with my wife and there I heard the best that God has for us."

On leaving the police he took up the post of Community Safety Officer with East Ayrshire Council and for the three years prior to training for ministry he was the Alcohol and Drug Information and Prevention Officer with NHS Ayrshire.

Our minister is also part-time chaplain to HMP Dumfries.
